The bill, titled the Fuel the Force Act of 2026, would amend the Internal Revenue Code to exclude up to the first $100,000 of ordinary income earned annually by qualified full-time law enforcement officers from gross income. The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-08) and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03) on January 22, 2026. This measure represents one of the most significant federal efforts in recent history to directly invest in the financial well-being of the men and women who protect our communities.
“This legislation recognizes what we have been telling members of Congress week after week: law enforcement officers are under unprecedented pressure and departments are facing recruitment shortages and retention challenges,” said Bert Eyler, President of Police Officers’ Defense Coalition. “The Fuel the Force Act is not just tax policy, it’s a critical retention tool, a recruitment incentive, and a powerful statement that this nation values those who put on the badge. This is the least we can do for Officers that put their own safety on the line for their communities year after year.”
Across the country, departments are struggling to recruit and retain experienced officers. Many seasoned law enforcement professionals are leaving the profession early due to burnout, political hostility, and economic strain. By providing meaningful tax relief to career officers, this legislation directly addresses workforce stability and sends a clear message of support.
“After five years of service, officers have already demonstrated their commitment and sacrifice,” Eyler continued. “Allowing them to keep more of what they earn is both fiscally responsible and morally right. If we want strong communities, we must support the people who protect them.”
Police Officers’ Defense Coalition urges the House of Representatives to pass the Fuel the Force Act swiftly through committee and bring it to the floor for passage. PODC also calls on the Senate to stand ready to support this critical legislation and deliver meaningful relief to America’s law enforcement officers.
Police Officers’ Defense Coalition was formed to advocate for police officers, public safety officers, sheriffs, and those representing the law enforcement community to fight against the “War on Cops.” For more information, visit https://policeofficersdefensecoalition.com/
