Legislation Update: House Judiciary Approves Two Bills in support of Law Enforcement

Legislation Update: House Judiciary Approves Two Bills in support of Law Enforcement

March 26, 2025 Posted by Elena Uncategorized No Comments

As of March 25, 2025, the House Judiciary Committee has approved two priority bills in support of law enforcement: the LEOSA Reform Act (H.R. 2243) and the Improving Law Enforcement Safety and Wellness Through Data Act (H.R. 2240), sending them to the full House for consideration.  These two bills passed last Congress with bipartisan votes and they are part of our larger National Police Week legislative strategy. We now look to see them on the House floor when they come up for a vote before or during Police Week 2025.

The Legislation of the LEOSA Reform Act offers minor but significant alterations to the current LEOSA act in order to improve the safety of retired and active law enforcement personnel. Currently, there are several sections which prohibit qualified retired or active duty members of law enforcement from carrying their concealed weapons in certain restricted areas. LEOSA reform seeks to expand the exemption and allow these individuals to carry in school zones, national parks, and certain Federal buildings, (e.g. post officers, Social Security Administration, etc.). This act also lightens restrictions on magazine capacity to ensure officers aren’t inadvertently exposed to legal jeopardy.

The Improving Law Enforcement Safety and Wellness Through Data Act would strengthen protections for law enforcement officers by enhancing data collection on anti-police attacks and assessing mental health support for officers nationwide. This act directs the Department of Justice to evaluate how it reports on attacks against Law enforcement officers and also seeks to analyze how widely mental health resources are available and utilized by officers. Through the enhancement of data analysis and reports, these two key pillars of the act give agencies the tools they need to respond more efficiently to threats and improve the safety and wellness of officers on duty.

Police Officers’ Defense Coalition fully supports and praises these two bills for their integrity and purpose in supporting law enforcement safety and wellbeing. These acts are critical officer safety issues and we look forward to seeing them passed and enacted in order to better champion those who serve our communities. PODC continues to lobby Congress in order to support these issues, but we need your voice to make this happen as well! We ask that you contact your members of Congress today and urge them to give their support of  H.R. 2243 and H.R. 2240 to ensure our law enforcement officers continue to be valued and protected.
